Hi everyone,

today we finished talking about Ben's video. Here is what we said about it:

Ben was a candidate for the best job in the world in Australia, in 2009. This year, six candidates can win the competition.

Job Description:

- You have to take pictures, write a blog, and promote Australia's landscapes and culture.

Necessary qualities:

- You have to be adventurous. If you are adventurous, "crazy", and energetic, you can take sensational pictures that are difficult to take and that are worthy of a good pay (= valuable).

- You have to be sociable, talkative, and a great communicator.

Ben's experiences:

- He has already snorkelled and scuba-dived. He has also bungee-jumped = He is adventurous.

- He has already written newspaper articles. So that's positive for his application because he has to write a blog.

Vocab:

- a resume

- an application

- an applicant = a candidate for a job

- (to) apply for a job

- a vacant position

_____________________

Homework:

Hi guys,

today you had to recap Ben's experiences to apply for the "Best Job in the World", an island caretaker who is given AUD $150,000 for six months to take photos and write a blog about Australia... not too bad, isn't it?

I then explained you what the final task will be: You are going to apply for one of the best jobs in the world. You will have to create a video to be selected.

You can find some information about this year's competition here:

best-jobs.JPG

Finally, we worked on grammar and you had to find out if the people in the picture were lying or saying the truth. Here are some things we wrote down:

She is telling the truth. She has forgotten her umbrella.

They are telling the truth. They have spent a holiday in Hawaii. Look at their shirts with flowers!

He is lying. He hasn't made his bed.

...

Homework:

Hi guys,

today we first listened to some of your stories about the creation of the world according to Aborigines.
For example, Arno told the story of "how the moon was created". CONGRATULATIONS! That was very interesting!

Then we showed you how to do dot-painting and you could see that it was not so easy when you practised yourself. You really need to be patient, and talented to produce something perfect.

You can view the entire video here:

Homework:

Hi guys,

today I had to struggle so that you decided to work... however this was made impossible because of so many of you... this is absolutely unacceptable...

During the 1st hour, we corrected the webquest and saw how to use the superlative. Here is what we wrote:

- the most successful Queen of the UK was Victoria as she conquered the world.

- the oldest people in Australia are the Aborigines.

- the 2nd biggest rock on Earth is Ayers Rock. It's 318 meters high, the size of a 10-story-building.

- the largest coral reef in the world is the Great Barrier Reef.

- the most important animals in Australia are: the koala, the kangaroo, the wombat, ...

- the most broadly spoken language is English but there is no official language.

- the largest city is Sydney but it's not the capital city.

-> the + most + adjectif long

Then in the second part of the class, we continued the lesson with a writing workshop. You first had to identify the different parts of Kathryn's story and then write your own guide lines with:

1- initial situation (who / where / when):

koala - lizard / in the Australian desert, the outback / "a long time ago, during the Dreamtime, ..."

2- problem

the sun / it's too hot for the koala.

3- help

an intelligent idea from the lizard / the lizard's intelligence.

4- resolution of the problem:

the lizard transforms into a tree. He can proft from the sun and the koala from the shadow.

5- conclusion:

the first tree was created.

Finally, you had to create your own guidelines for your story.

Homework:

Hi everyone,

today we worked on finding information on the internet about Australia. Some of you did a very good job while otherq really didn't... What a shame...

Whatever... you learned many things about the country (some facts about its geography, history, environment, ... etc).

Homework:

Hi guys,

today we worked with Kathryn on Australia and Aborigines again. You could watch a video about one of the Aborigines' beliefs, a story that they created to explain the creation of the world.

Then Kathryn taught you a story that SHE wrote for you explaining the origin of trees.

Here is the picture she drew to illustrate it. She will finish it for next time.

20130408_095927.jpg

And here is the story that goes along with the picture:

How Trees Were Created

By Kathryn

A long time ago, during the Dreamtime, the land was flat and empty and the sun was very hot. A koala and a lizard were wandering in search for a home for the koala.

After a while, the koala became weak. “The sun is too hot for me,” he said to the lizard, “I cannot go any further. I need some shelter.”

The lizard looked around, but there was no shelter in sight. The lizard loved the warmth of the sun, but he saw that his friend, the koala, was very weak from the heat. He wondered if he could find a way to help shelter the koala while still receiving the warmth of the sun himself. Suddenly, the lizard got an idea. “Koala, my dear friend, I can provide you with shelter,” he said.

“You? But you’re so small! How could this be possible, Lizard?” asked the Koala.

The lizard lifted himself from the ground and rose until be was balancing on his tail. “Take some dirt and throw it on my body,” he instructed the koala. The koala did as the lizard asked, and as the brown dirt hit the lizard, it caused him to grow higher and higher and take on the brown color of the dirt. As he grew, he stretched out his arms and legs. The dirt spread onto them but left his fingers and toes alone. His green fingers and toes widened in order to shelter the koala from the sun.

The koala sat under the shelter that the lizard had provided, and the first tree was created.

Hi guys,

today we first made a recap about what experiences you had or not and then we did a guessing game.

You had to go around the class and ask questions to your classmates to know if they had done such and such a thing.

Aurélia declared she was the winner and made a recap of what she knew but the class didn't appoint her as the winner since some of her answers were incorrect... argh... too bad! You'll do better next time.

Here is what you finally said:

Donovan has already cheated [id] for an English test.

Enzo has already downloaded [id] music legally but he lied.

Madeline has already learned [t] how to speak Japanese.

Djawad has already eaten* snails.

Ma-Elis has already run* a marathon... of course...! =)

* irregular verbs!

[...] = pronunciation of /ed/

http://www.lamarhenderson.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/colleen_wallace_nungari_dreamtime_sisters_image1.jpgHey,

today, I'm really NOT proud of you. You behaved like brats and this has to stop. We're not preparing classes with Kathryn for you to treat us like that. You are REALLY DISRESPECTFUL and I won't accept it...

Well, anyhow...

Some of you learned interesting stuff about Australia's culture, geography, and animals; and also about the Aborigines, the ancestral people of Australia who believe in "Dreamtime", this era when everything and everyone was created by natural spirits.

______________________

Homework:

Hi guys,

today we first practised talking about your fictitious trip to Australia. Here are some of the things you mentionned:

Wishes:

If I went to Australia (again) ...,

I would visit Sydney and Canberra.

I would go to "the outback".

I would eat kangaroo at a local restaurant.

...

-----------------

Experiences:

Have you ever bungee-jumped [t]?

-> Yes, I have.-> I have already bungee-jumped but I wouldn't like to do it again.

-> No, I haven't. -> I have never bungee-jumped but I would like to.

Question = EVER

Positive answer = ALREADY

Negative answer = NEVER

Hi guys,

today we finished speaking about Saint Patrick's Day with Kathryn.

You learned new things about this tradition in Ireland which is celebrated every year in Ireland and around the globe on March 17th (it was yesterday!!!).

Here is what you learned about the leprechaun, a nasty fairy:

If you can catch a leprechaun, he will give you his treasure (a pot of gold) and grant you 3 wishes. But be careful, if you wish 4 wishes, everything is cancelled! It's the leprechaun's trick.

Remember:

The 3-leaf clover is the symbol of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

The 4-leaf shamrock is a lucky charm.
