Hey,

today we first corrected the exercise that you had to make about the consequences of global warming. Here is what we said:

Since there is global warning, snow has melted
Since the industrial revolution, endangered species have disappeared

... water supply has decreased
... sea level has risen
... bush fires have increased
... the earth has become warmer
... temperatures have gone up
... some coral reefs have vanished

Then we continued the class with a mind map that you had to complete and from which you had to make sentences orally. Here is one example of a sentence you could say:

Rappel des structures importantes:

Exprimer le conseil:

shouldn't /should
had better not / had better
ought not to / ought to

Exprimer ce qui ne devrait pas être:
instead of + V-ing.

Ex:

To solve global warming and reduce our carbon footprint, we shouldn't buy frozen food. Instead of buying frozen food, we ought to go to the farmers' market.

HW: you need to make at least 5 complex sentences about the document to express advice. Don't forget that you will take a vocabulary test and an irregular verb test.
Files: download the mindmap here.

Hey,

here are the documents that you can use for your press conference. Select the one you want to study and prepare all the roles for it.

final-task-global-warming.JPG

You need to be able to...:

- ... speak about the charity or artist who produced the document (role, goal, ...)

- ... describe in details

- ... and analyse the content of the visual

- ... give advice to people so that they become more environmental friendly

If you need any help, please feel free to contact me.

Take care,

Mr Hattais.

http://www.eaststaffsbc.gov.uk/SiteCollectionImages/Environment%20Image.jpgHey,

today we first corrected the exercise about since / for and we continued speaking about the audio document we had started last time.

Here is what we said about the causes for global warming:

"to be written by Idir"

Then we spoke about the possible consequences:

"to be written by Idir"

Finally, I gave you a worksheet to increase your vocabulary about the environment and natural disasters. We will finish it next time.

HW: complete the grid and make sentences to express the consequences of global warming on the planet.

Files: Download the grid here (you can print it in colours!)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kcmunazIu1o/S-prbhg_AQI/AAAAAAAAAW0/y984VPnsKqw/s1600/present+perfect.jpgHey,

today we first talked about the role of different charities and here is what we said about some of them as a correction for the homework:

"to be written by Idir"

Then we continued the class with the oral document from last time. We spoke about the reasons for global warming and we made a list again and we particularly focused our attention on the verbs in the document. Here is what we said about grammar (and present perfect):

Present Perfect = exprimer un bilan (fait passé ayant des conséquences dans le présent)

Forme: auxiliaire HAVE au présent + p. passé
---> has / have + p. passé (3ème colonne irrégulier ou V-ed régulier)

Examples:

The Earth's climate has fluctuated
Temperature has risen
People have burnt fossil fuels

Compléments de temps qui déclenchent le Present Perfect:

For 2.5 millions years, ...
(ever) Since the industrial revolution began, ...
Since 1966, ...

HW: don't forget to begin and review your irregular verbs (cf. bled) + complete exercise #1 p. 115 (cf. Bled)

Hey,

charities visuals

today we first talked about the different pictures from the chart and we particularly insisted on the first three. Here is what we said about them:

1) The photograph represents a polar bear on a iceberg; it aims at representing a shocking reality. It intends to make the viewers / spectators react. It is used to denounce global warming.
If we continue to pollute, the world is in danger.

2) The advertisement campaign depicts a forest: the trees look like two lungs; the right one is damaged. It aims at denouncing deforestation.
If we continue to cut down trees, we won't breathe in the future.

3) The movie poster represents penguins...

Then we continued the lesson with the quick study of a graph about temperature and carbon dioxyde. It served as a help to understand the audio document about global warming.

You can listen to it again below:

Here is what we wrote about the document:

The document makes a list of the possible reasons why the temperature is going up / rising / increasing. It aims at sensitizing people about global warming.
It intends to make us react and reduce our carbon dioxide emissions / our carbon footprint.

HW: for next time, you need to learn your lesson and new vocabulary. You also need to find out about Farenheit conversion (0°, 100°, and 37°C) + fill the worksheet about "charities".

Hey,

http://www.buzzecolo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/WWF-deforestation-chez-ginie-des-vertes-des-pas-mures-blogspot.jpgtoday you first took a vocabulary test about how to locate things in space. Then we continued with an oral presentation of the ad campaign by the WWF. It was rather poor for something you had to prepare in advance and that had been done in class...

Then we corrected the exercise you had to do for today and we commented on some pictures explaining the aim / goal / objective of each visual. Here is what we said:

"to be written by Idir"

New vocabulary  to be learnt:

"to be written by Idir"

HW: for next time, you need to make 8 sentences explaining the goal of each picture (at least one sentence per picture)

Hey,

chart---global-warming.JPG

today after making a quick recap of what we had said  about the document, we continued describing and analysing the picture. Here is what we said:

WWF  ----> it's a charity which protects the environment and particularly animals which are dying (endangered species)

For example:
- polar bears (attention à la prononciation)
- white tigers
- whales

The logo of the charity represents a panda in the bottom right-hand corner. It's a symbol for animals in danger / endangered species.

The catch-phrase and the slogan are at the bottom of the picture.
They mean that... :
- ... instead of not acting, we should care for planet.

- ... instead of wasting time, we had better act very fast.
- ... instead of not being aware of the problem, we ought to take a stand.

Then I gave you a set of two document about methodology (how to identify the type of documents).

You need to finish completing them for next time.

HW: finish the chart (le tableau) and learn your lesson and vocabulary (-> test is on the way!)

Files: you can download the documents with a better quality here

-> the pictures (in colours)

-> the vocabulary

Hey,

today we first talked again about global warming and we tried to give a little definition. Here is what we said:

Global warming is due to pollution and more precisely to greenhouse gases. The heat of sun comes into the atmosphere and cannot got back because of the ozone layer and the greenhouse gases!
Consequently, the planet's temperature goes up.

Then we started to describe and comment upon a picture. Here is what we said:

Methodology -> how to locate things in a document:

"to be written by Idir"

Click on the picture to enlarge

emergency.jpgDescription of the picture:

The document is a picture a photo
In the background, there is a car. It's on fire and there is a lot of smoke. It's a serious accident; the car is upside down. The driver was probably going to the house in the distance: I can see a man who is crawling out of the car. He is trying to escape.

If I see this accident, I need to call 999 (UK) or
911 (US)

(to) call for... :

- ... an ambulance / EMTs
- ... fire fighters
- ... the police

Hypotheses: in the foreground, on the right
- a car is stopped because the driver has seen the accident
- a cow is looking at the accident
- the cause of the accident
- a telephone booth

The ambulance:

There is in fact / actually an ambulance but the EMT are not doing their jobs.

They should help but instead of helping, they are waiting:

instead of urinating, the EMT should help the driver.
instead of being on the phone, ...
instead of smoking, ...
instead of eating, ...

Instead of calling, they should try to save his life. They ought to do their jobs and they had better help the person in the car.

Grammar: Exprimer le reproche (forme négative du conseil)

They shouldn't be urinating.
They ought not to  be urinating.
They had better not be urinating.
They ought not to be calling
They had better not be smoking

HW: learn the comments and the new vocabulary.

http://www.solcomhouse.com/images/Global_Warming.gifHey,

today you first talked about your super hero and then we began our new sequence about global warming and the environment. Here is what we said about it:

Your Task:

Présenter lors d'une conférence de presse la nouvelle affiche publicitaire d'une association pour la défense du climat.

Il faudra que vous soyez capable de... :

1- ... parler de l'association, son rôle et son but
2- ... décrire l'affiche en détails
3- ... analyser le message donné par l'affiche
4- ... donner des conseils pour être davantage "environmental friendly".

I'll see you after the break. Until then, enjoy your holidays.

Mr Hattais.

http://fina.lbcc.edu/newsletter09/images/GoodGrade.jpgHey,

today the students who were there had to present their super hero to the class. Some of you did a good job. I'll continue assessing pupils on Friday. Until then, get ready to speak again. You may have a chance to do better!

Finally we also talked about phonetics and how to understand phonetic transcription.

Take care,
Mr Hattais.
