Hey,

today we first talked about the different arguments in favour or against the use of mobile phones. Here is the recap:

There is another advantage: thanks to mobile phone people can get a hold of you at any time. However, people may get addicted to cell phones and they may become lonely and isolated.

synonyms:

(to) get a hold of...
(to) keep in touch with...
(to) get in contact with...
cell phone / mobile phone

Then we continued the lesson with asking some questions about your reading habits. We will start our new document next time.

HW: get prepared for a vocabulary test on Monday.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uMVWHAJRsDg/S8650QHj2UI/AAAAAAAAAL0/50ahBL3ICjE/s1600/korea.gifHey,

today we first warmed up very quickly about what your mobile phone usage was like. Here is what we said:

"to be written by Laura"

Then we continued talking about last time's document and here is what we concluded:

The document is about / deals with the advantages and drawbacks of cell phone usage.

Advantages: you can rely on your cell phone because it is practical and it gives you more privacy.

Drawbacks: however, it can be dangerous if you are addicted to it. Some students take refuge in it. They don't wanna talk to people. There is no face to face interaction. Everything becomes impersonal and text-driven. Students may become isolated / lonely.

Finally, we worked a little bit on phonetics and here are the expressions or words we focused on:

little
little bit more privacy: [ai] and [i] sound
addiction
affecting: [t] sound
adult: [a] sound
twenty-four: [t] or [d]
they don't want to talk / they don't wanna talk
ability: [t] or [d]

You can listen to the list of words again below:

HW: don't forget your irregular verbs + make your vocabulary sheets (vocabulary test on the way...)

http://lesactusdelili.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/interview.gifHey,

today we first did a quick recap of what had been said in previous lessons and in particular things about mobile phone usage (conclusion of the opinion poll). Then we listened to the document again and here is what we said about it:

Conclusion of the study:

The report / study / poll shows that students between the ages of 18 and 24 are addicted to calling.
They dial 290 phone calls a month.
The study also shows that teenagers between 13 and 17 are not addicted to calling, they are hooked on sending text messages . They send an average of 435 messages a month.

Finally, we tried to understand if the opinions of the interviewees were positive or negative. Here is what we wrote in the chart:

The poll shows that people think it can be an advantage or a drawback:

  • Advantages:

-> to rely on / to trust
-> more privacy

  • Drawbacks:

-> refuge
-> dangerous -> impersonal

HW: get prepared to talk about the document and about your personal use of the cell phone.

http://kimandjason.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/12basicsl.jpgHey,

today you first talked about your personal mobile phone usage thanks to an opinion poll (a questionnaire / a study). Here is what we said and the conclusions we drew:

Some teenagers are addicted to their cell phones: more precisely, they are hooked on sending text messages.
For example, Laura sends an average of 200 messages a day. That's 5000 texts a month and about 1 message every two minutes.
Most students have / possess / own a samsung in the class.

Then we continued on with a new oral document about mobile phone usage.

You can listen to it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

The document is a report. There is an introduction, some interviews and a conclusion. It deals with mobile phones and teenagers. The journalist asks questions to 3 students about their mobile phone usage.
The scene probably takes place at school. The characters voices don't sound like children's voices.

HW: for next time, you need to be able to talk about your personal usage of the phone and prepare a short recap about what we said about the document.

http://www.celtnet.org.uk/mobile-phone/img/mobile-evolution.gifHey,

today you first took a vocabulary test about the lesson. You need to create some word banks about "mobile phones", "accidents", "how to express opinion", "feelings (positive and negative)", etc... if you haven't done so, so far.

Then we continued the lesson with the listening of the last part of the document. We particularly focused our attention on the feelings of the characters and on the catch-phrase. Here is what we said:

Feelings of the woman:
The woman sounds panicked / shocked / scared / distressed after the crash.
She is crying / sobbing and she is breathing quickly. She understands that her husband may be dead. The woman's voice is shaky.

The catch phrase: "you don't need to be in a car to cause a crash. Think ! When people are driving, kill the conversation = stop the conversation / hang up the phone.

voc:

(to) sob: (to) cry and breathe quickly at the same time .

HW: you need to fill in this poll and get prepared to talk about your mobile phone usage.

Here are the questions:

Questionnaire / poll about the mobile phone:
- Type of package: 1h , 2h ...
- activities: email, TV, text, photo, camera, music, games ... and your favorite one?
- switch off in class ? : Yes or No. If not -> ring tone, silent mode, ...?
- age group : 14-16 years old
- age you got it: ... years old
- Who pays? : You or your parents, or both?
- price per month : ...
- operator : SFR , bouygues telecom , orange ...
- phone brand : HTC , apple , sony ericsson ..
- text or phone ?
- How many texts per month? : ...

(to) pay attention (to..)

Analysis:

Then we continued the lesson with a new audio document. You can listen to it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

Type of document: an awareness campaign.

Topic: The scene takes place in a car; a wife is calling her husband to talk about trifles (not important things). He is coming back from work and he must be tired. It's in the evening. He is both driving and phoning at the same time. It's dangerous because he can't concentrate. And that's why there is an accident / a crash.

List of sounds
: ring tone / tyres / shattered glass / folded metal

HW: être capable de présenter ce document à l'oral (prise de parole de 1m30 environ) + contrôle de vocabulaire sur les mots nouveaux de la séquence.

Hey,

today we first talked about a new document dealing with road safety and mobile phones.

road-sign.JPG

Here is what we said about it:

Road Safety:

- type of doc: ad campaign -> awarness campaign

- topic: ... deals with / is about road safety and mobile phones

- goal: ... intends to ... warn / sensitize people about ...

- description: ... represents / depicts / features... a fake road sign
there is (/ are) ...

-> there are two sentences wich are mixed up / jumbled up. It's difficult to read them when you are not concentrated. The first one is written in black and the second is written in white.
The background colour of the road is red.
It evokes both danger and interdiction.

- analysis:
It's the illustration that driving and phoning at the same time is difficult,
dangerous and forbidden. It's a comparison.

Then we corrected your homework for today. Here is the correction:

Recap interdiction:

It's not allowed to breathe.
It's not permitted to daydream in class.

HW: get ready to talk about the document we studied in class and don't forget to update the vocabulary, grammar, ... sections of your copybook as there will be a vocabulary test very soon.

http://www.proshieldsafetysigns.co.uk/signs/3239_signs.jpgHey,

today we first talked about the previous lesson again and then we continued to talk about mobile phones with a new document. You can listen to it again below:

Here is what we said about it (=today's lesson):

Topic: the document is an advert. It deals with road safety.

Target: it aims at drivers who phone and drive at the same time.

Goal: it intends to warn people about the dangers mobile phones.

Content: "you're four times more likely to have a crash when you're on a mobile phone".

"It's hard to concentrate on two things at the same time."

Exprimer l'interdiction:

"to be written by Axel"

HW: finish filling in your worksheet about the "stupid" road signs and create your own + learn your lesson + don't forget to create new entries of vocabulary, grammar, ... in your copybooks.

+ Don't forget about your IRREGULAR VERBS!

Files:

http://www.coralsprings.com/article1/images/PE00132_.gifHey,

today we first began the class with a quick warm-up about what you had done during the week-end and what you like doing in your spare time. Here is what we said:

- Alexandre likes sleeping, he slept during the whole weekend.
- As for Ary and Michael, they enjoy soccer. Michael plays in a club and he says he has a good level. He would like to become a professional.
It's a dream .
- Contrary to Ary and Michael, Fabien is not sporty. Fabien is crazy about playing video games.

Then we continued to speak about the interview and we listed more advantages and drawbacks. Here is what we said:

Advantages:
- Parents can't hear what teenagers say to their friends. Teenagers can have more privacy.
- Contrary to a land line, you can call from anywhere.
- When you have a mobile phone, you don't need to find a phone box / phone booth.
- You can call your parents and they can come and pick you up. The phone permits teenagers to call their parents if they have a problem.

Drawbacks:
- You must buy a package and it's often expensive / it's not cheap.
- A mobile phone allows parents to trace their teenagers; so they have less privacy.

-> There's a paradox because a mobile phone is also an advantage: it doesn't enable parents to hear what teenagers say on the phone.

Finally, we began to listen to a new audio document that you can listen to again below:

We didn't have time to write anything about it yet. We will continue next time.

HW: learn your lesson of course!

iphone.jpgHey,

today we first did a quick recap of what we had said last time and then we corrected your homework about the functions of the iphone. Here is what we said:

"to be written by Laura"

Then we listened to an audio document and we tried to analyse the advantages and drawbacks of a mobile phone given by the speaker.

You can listen to the document here again:

Here is the list of ideas we began to make:

Advantages:
- call people
- chat with friends
- it's practical / useful / handy
- Her parents don't interfere

Drawbacks:
- embarrasing when in class we forget to switch it off / turn it off because it may ring.
- it enables her parents to trace her.

-> A mobile phone allows her to speak with her friends without her parents interfering.

HW: pour la prochaine fois, connaissez votre leçon et votre nouveau vocabulaire. Apprenez bien comment exprimer la possibilité et l'autorisation.
