Hey,

today you took your vocabulary and lesson test. I'll be giving you the grades next week.
In the second part of the hour, we corrected your essays and dialogues you had to complete at the beginning of the year.

Remember:
- for a dialogue, don't speak for no reason. Use different verbs of speech and vary the way your characters speak (adverbs and adjectives related to behaviour).
- for an essay, use link words to organise your speech and clearly answer the question of the subject at the end.

Here are the two written expressions that I wrote for you, with inspiration from your own upgraded productions.

Today, we started a new sequence on Ireland.

I played the beginning of a video but without the image and you had to guess where the scene might take place and justify your choices.

Here is the extract again:

Here is what we said:

- about Ireland:
"Ireland is divided into two parts. The first part, Ulster, belongs to the United Kingdom whereas / while the other part, Eire, is independent. Ulster is mainly Protestant whereas / while Eire is mostly Catholic. The I.R.A wants Ulster to be free whereas / while the United Kingdom wants to keep Ulster."

-about the document:
"I can hear the sounds of drums and of bagpipes. I recognize a song by the Irish band U2. These sounds are the clues how I can say the scene might take place in Ireland.
The drums grow quicker and quicker, louder and louder. It creates tension and suspense.
Then there is the explosion of shattered / broken glass.
"
"It might take place in the street, at school, or at a concert because I can hear people who are talking / chatting."

Grammar: le comparatif graduel - de plus en plus ... = more + adjectif long and more + adjectif long ou comme c'est le cas ici: adjectif court + er and adjectif court + er.
L'expression de la supposition peut se faire à l'aide d'un auxiliaire modal (ici: might + verbe).

We'll watch the video with the image next time so that you can confirm if your hypotheses were right or not.

HW: For those who haven't turned in their essay on technology, I need them in my mailbox before 8 p.m. tonight. Cliquez sur "Do you need help?" à droite de l'écran pour ouvrir un formulaire de contact et m'envoyer votre devoir.
+ For Friday, Oct 2nd 2009 : Find information about the I.R.A. + Written comprehension test.

Today, after having a little chit chat about super powers, we finished studying the document about robot soldiers.

We filled in your worksheet with elements from the document making a brief summary and trying to go into details.

For next time, you need to be prepared to present this document to the class in English and be ready to give your opinion about it
(5-minute presentation). You must also think of questions that I might ask you.

A question I could ask: "would you like to become a marine in the American army? why?"....

Hey,

today we spoke about the characters in text recapitulating what we had said last time about them but we didn't have time to copy it down. Here is what we wrote:

The characters

Jacob is the main character. He immigrated from Russia to escape from the persecutions of the Jews. He used to live in a small village but now he wants to enter the US so as to have a better life.
The first inspector was very strict and authoritative. He checked if immigrants could read and write in English. He also checked whether / if immigrants were healthy or not. He was quick because he may have wanted to intimidate the immigrants. But he may have wanted to have the most important number of immmigrants pass the tests.
The first inspector may have been authoritative because he thought he couldn't help everyone. If he did help everyone, the immigrants might have taken advantage of him.

Doctor Carl Travers was, contrary to the inspector, very gentle and understanding. He may have wanted to help Jacob. He may have understood Jacob's situation. If he didn't let Jacob enter the US, Jacob might have died.

Then I asked you to screen the text and hunt for words related to "fear" and "pain". We didn't have time to finish but here are the words we selected:

Pain:
wound, (to) heal, (to) limp, agony...
Fear: apprehension, nervously...

HW: for Friday, I want you to listen to the document again and make three columns to classify the words ending in /-ed/ according to their pronunciation, i.e. [id], [d], or [t].
You can listen to it again here:

See you next time.

We first had a quick discussion about superhero power as a warm up. Here is what we wrote:

"to be written by Nadège..."

We then did a quick recap about the text. Here is some more information we added about the musical ability the parents wanted for their son to have:

"to be written by Nadège...
"

We then corrected part of the homework you had to complete for today. Here are the questions corresponding to the answers you had on your "jeopardy" worksheet:

"to be written by Nadège..."

HW: for tomorrow wednesday, you'll need to review your lessons and vocabulary about genetics. It includes all the document we've studied from the opinion poll, to the Gattaca trailer, to the text itself, to the exercises and of course your copybook. Get ready!

Hey,

during the second part of the lesson, we reviewed some important vocabulary about "pain" and "fear". We also corrected Jacob's speech.

Here is the correct version of the dialogue:

"to be written by Guillaume..."

Then, I gave you a worksheet on "how to write a letter" and some vocabulary about "sadness, anger, surprise, and fear".
You will need to use them in order to complete the following assignment:
"After the events in his village, Jacob decides to write a letter to his aunt Mary who lives in England. Insist on his feelings and project." (200 words).

I advise you to use a draft (un brouillon) that could look like this:

Events Feelings
1- Event #1 1- Feeling #1

Etc... continuez le tableau avec plusieurs événements et plusieurs sentiments associés, sans oublier bien sûr l'expression du projet.
Soyez originaux tout en collant aux événements et soignez votre présentation et votre grammaire. Vous devez rédiger un succession d'événements au passé. Utilisez donc le prétérit pour conjuguer vos verbes.

You can dowload the worksheet and the vocabulary list down here.

Today,

after a quick recap of what the swine flu was, we talked about Jacob and the reasons why he was scared. Here is what we wrote:

"He is afraid of being sent back to Russia.
He is afraid of not passing the medical test.
He is scared of not going to the U.S.
He is scared of not entering the U.S
"

We then talked about Carl Travers and made some hypotheses on why he was more friendly than the first inspector:

"Carl Travers may have been German.
He may have understood Jacob's situation.
"

HW: next time (Thursday), you'll have a vocabulary and lesson test. Some of you will also be asked to read the text. You can train yourself with the audio version below.
