http://transitionfarnham.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/buy-nothing-day-20062.jpgHey,

today Modibo first presented his picture, then we continued the lesson about how to analyse a visual correctly. Here is what we said about the "Hidden context" and "Opinion" parts for the visual about shopaholics:

"to be written by Vasanth"

Then we continued the lesson with the beginning of a study of a new text entitled "Living up to the dream". We first analysed the key elements, focusing on the characters present and mentioned.

HW: don't forget to write the parts "Description" and "Analysis" for your visual. You will need to turn them in to me next time.

Hey,

today we worked on how to comment on a picture and we more precisely focused our attention on the Description part. (I-D-A-H-O).

Here are the key elements to succeed:

"to be written by ..."

Then we collectively described the 1st picture (about addiction to shopping). Here is what we wrote:

"to be written by Vasanth"

HW: for next time, you need to finish completing the description and analysis (written form) of this picture.

Pensez également à soigner votre posture et votre tenue vestimentaire.

Veillez à réviser la méthodologie de la description de l'image et les thèmes que nous avons déjà abordés en cours.

Good Luck!

You can practise speaking on any of the following documents. When you have finished your draft, you can click on the picture and record yourself on the new page. Hope this will be of some help to you. Please, make sure you send me an email to tell me that you have recorded a commentary and that you would like me to correct it for you.

Take care,

Mr Hattais.

Hey,

today we first had the oral presentations of both Karine and Fanny. Then we continued the lesson with the correction of your exercise about attitudes.

You need to learn this vocabulary by heart. Finally, we talked about phonetics and how to pronounce the /-ed/ and /-ous/ endings correctly.

HW: For next time, you will need to know this vocabulary by HEART! and to present the document of your choice below (I-D-A-H-O -> Identify = type of document, main topic, target / goal).

http://img.over-blog.com/499x370/0/43/50/45/Apartheid-cartoon.jpgHey,

today we began to talk about the correction of your mock exam that you did NOT succeed at all!

There are some simple tricks about methods that you don't master yet! You need to try and make hypotheses about what the text means even when you don't understand EVERY single word.

Try to highlight everything that's important about the typical WH- questions and remember the historical context:

WHO -> characters
WHERE -> place
WHEN -> time / date -> 1991 (published 1 year before the end of Apartheid)
WHAT -> actions
HOW -> feelings / reactions / attitudes / behaviours

Know the translation for the main questions:

PICK OUT FROM THE TEXT = QUOTE --> QUOTATION
ANSWER AND JUSTIFY IN YOUR OWN WORDS

Try to make a connection between the different elements in the text (why this reaction? why some pauses"---" in the speech? why a bomb? who died? why TV? what happened before? what will happen next?)

It's only this way that you will make progress! As for how to improve the writing part, we'll see about it next time.

HW: you need to complete a matching exercise about feelings.

Files: download your exercise here (orginally created by Cyril Brot)

Hey,

today some of you presented a visual to the class and they will have to post their presentation here:

pollution.jpg

"to be written by Vasanth"

http://adsoftheworld.com/files/images/aids.jpg

"to be written by Amina"

Then we continued the lesson with the viewing of a 10-minute extract from the movie "Cry Freedom", an adaptation from the book and particularly from the scene we studied. I hope you liked it and that you will go and rent for it (in original version... of course! :))

HW: you will take a two-hour test (NO break) on Wednesday from 9 to 11 am. Get prepared. The text will have "South Africa" as the main topic (both comprehension and expression).
