Hey,
today we first warmed up with a fun dialogue about a mother and her son who refuses to eat up his breakfast. Here is what we said:
Warm up: Expressing anger and exasperation
"Finish your breakfast!"
"No, I won't, you stupid cow!" (notez ici la valeur de "will" = refus, volonté)
The child bites his mother and spits at her.
"Ouch! What a brat!", and she spits at him back.
" It's uneddible!"
"What on earth* are you doing?"
What the heck* ...
What the Hell**...
What the f*** ...
She insults him back and slaps him across the face.
She begins to weep and calls for her husband. "You'll be grounded!"
Synonyms for "weep": cry / sob / whimper / wail
Les particularités du dialogue en anglais:
Pour écrire les dialogues en anglais, on utilise seulement les guillemets sans mettre de tirets.
ex : "You'll be grounded!"
+ ne pas oublier de mettre des verbes de discours qui modulent la façon de parler des personnages.
Then we continued our lesson and corrected the exercises you had to complete for today about question tags. Here is what we wrote, as well as the pronunciation rule in French:
Formtion du tag = , auxiliaire forme inversée + sujet ?
L'intonation d'un tag descend lorsque le locuteur demande la confirmation mais qu'il connaît la réponse.
Ex : Tommy found the book in the attic, didn't he?
Correction de l'exercice
1- It's probably time for Tommy to go home , isn't it? (l. 88)
2- A man can't know as much as a teacher, can he? (l.69)
3- A teacher has to be adjusted to every boy and girl, doesn't it? (l.78) (NB: it = ici parce que les professeurs dans le monde de Margie et Tommy sont des robots)
Finally, we completed the rest of the chart about "Narrative Techniques". Here is what we said about them and about our text in particular:
Focalization:
Narrator ? : Un intervenant externe qui sait tout sur tout.
*Margie ? : We only have information about Margie's feelings and information about what she sees. It's an internal focalization. We have the point of view of a character from the story.
Tommy ?
Tommy's mom ? : Personnage du récit qui n'est pas présent.
Type of Narrative (narration) :
*Mostly a story ?
Mostly a dialogue ?
Mostly a description ?
Type of Narrator :
Omnicsient ?
Unobstrusive ?
*Obstrusive?
(* accurate for the story "The Fun They Had")
HW: don't forget that you have sentences to translate for Wednesday. There will be a test about the story and the lesson in the 2nd part of the hour.
You also have a story to write for Friday (follow your self-assesment worksheet so that you gain all the points!). Use the vocabulary from the vocabulary worksheet I gave you... that is if you want to have a good grade...
Take care,
M. Hattais.
