Death Penalty - Dancer in the Dark

Hey,

today we first talked about AIDS again with a short recap of what we didn't have time to write in the copy books last time. Here is what we said:

Maybe people in Africa don't get the treatment because it's too expensive for them and because they just don't have pills. As for condoms, they are also expensive. Moreover, many Africans are fervent Catholics and until recently the pope prohibited the use of condoms / rubbers**

Then we continued the class with the beginning of a new sequence entitled: "Death Penalty". We started to talk about the subject and I told you what your final task would be: "to write a letter to a prisoner on death row". I hope you'll be motivated by this topic which is both fun and extremely serious.

Finally, we started to speak about "Dancer in the Dark" which is a musical tragedy dealing with the capital punishment. Here is what we said:

Dancer in the dark: Scene 1 - How to express hypotheses

- The scene is probably going to be about the love of a mother for her child. Selma may do everything in her power to save and cure / heal Gene from his genetic disease.

- The scene may deal with the fight between Selma and Bill to get the money back. Selma may go to Bill's house to ask for the money.

- The scene might be about friendly relationships between neighbours.
Bill may try to help Selma. He may comfort / sympathize with / support her.

- The scene is possibly about the straining / difficult working conditions of illegal immigrants in the U.S.
