Immigration - Facts and Figures

Hey,

today we first spoke a little about the swine flu and here is what we said:

"I would like the swine flu to spread in the 2nde5 so that the highschool would close and we wouldn't have class!" (how bad I am...!).

Vocabulary :
- swine flu
- an outbreak
- (to) spread
- (to be) infected with the virus

You may want to watch this video for further details in English about the epidemic.

I then gave you a new document to study, entitled "Immigration - Facts and Figures". You had to fill in a chart listing the reasons why people immigrated to the US and the factor lowering the number of immigrants. You checked your answers in pairs and we began gathering the information together. You can download the document below :

Vocabulary :
- destitute = poor
- unemployement, (to be) unemployed = jobless
- freedom
- a war refugee
- low wages = low salary
- to flee from... (fled, fled) : fuir qqch
- to be prejudiced against : avoir des préjugés envers
- 1900 : nineteen hundred

Here is what we said about the document:

"From 1840 to 1860, the Irish immigrated to the US because of the potato famine in Ireland. There wasn't enough food for the population because there was a disease in the vegetable. The Irish used to eat lots of potatoes. It was an easy crop. They fled in order to find food again and so as to escape hunger and starvation. Most of the Western Europeans went to America because they poor and destitute. They didn't have a job. They were jobless/unemployed. They hoped to have a better life. They wanted to make money, at least get better wages and why not make a fortune?"

Get Ready!
