Why is a text funny?

Hey,

today we first talked about your shopping habits as a warm up and we then continued with the regular class. We analysed our text deeper and say why it made us smile if not laugh. Here is what we said:

- It alludes to preconceived ideas / a stereotypical vision: Americans love junk food whereas English people hate it...

- It's humourous when the situation is unusual. For example when the characters of the story have an argument (their attitudes / behaviours / reactions are funny): the narrator behaves like a child when he sprints back to the trolley with his cereals.

     Voc: trolley / shopping cart

- Things are exaggerated. It's a caricature: "a paradise" / "heaven of junk food"

- There are incongruous examples or comparisons: "the country that gave the world cheese in a spray can" or another example: a hamburger "that squirts and plops onto your shirt."

You learned new vocabulary that you need to remember. Here is a possible list:
