The Guildford Four - Vocabulary

Today,

you first took a test and we recapitulated what we had said last time.
Then we added some information about the situation and about the characters:

The Irish civilians act together against the army. They might have set a trap against the soldiers.
The soldiers thought Jerry was a terrorist / a member of the IRA.

The soldiers were : not correct / mistaken / wrong.

The soldiers think people are terrorists. A lawyer may need to defend the thief against the accusations of the gunmen.


We finally worked on a text dealing with the Guilford Four who were wrongly accused and sentenced to life imprisonment because of the bombing at the inn.

The Historical Truth

 

In the Name of the Father takes liberties with the truth as the Guilford Four – who ______________________________ bombing a pub in Guildford, England in 1974, killing five people – and the Maguire Seven, ______________________ being their support network, were judged at different times.

The aim of the IRA bombing campaign was to “bring the war home” to England. Soon after, four young Irish people _________________________ and kept under __________________________ where they confessed to the bombing after being under ___________________ and suffering psychological and physical violence. In 1975, under the witch-hunt atmosphere which pervaded England at the time, the Four ______________________ to life imprisonment.
