English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hey,
today we spoke a little more about our text dealing with the first world war. We particularly focused our attention on Nell and Frank. Here is what we said about them:
Nell: She is not a widow anymore. She wears an engagement ring on her finger. She has a new lover / fiancé.
a widow -> woman
a widower -> man
Nell's attitude: Nell is quite patriotic when she sees Bill Monroe who tries not to go back to the Front, she thinks he is a coward. She thinks it's unfair for Percy if he doesn't go back. She is shocked / under shock. She is ashamed and embarrassed because, for her, every soldier should be brave and courageous.
cowardly (adj)
Frank's attitude: Frank is nervous. He doesn't want to talk about the trenches. The living conditions are dreadful / horrible. He is tongue-tied. When he finally evokes the trenches (chlorinated tea water), he feels ashamed because of the look of terror on his friends' faces.
HW: for next time, you need to know your lessons by heart and you will have looked up all the vocabulary that I gave you.
