English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hi guys,
today we first recapped the lesson about the text with Amélie who did a pretty good job on the whole.
Then we watched a report about Ruth Simmons. You can watch it again below:
Here is what we said about it:
This afro-American woman has had the will power / energy to work herself out of poverty. She comes from a dirt poor family where her mother was just a maid and her father a sheer cropper. She has succeeded in climbing up the social ladder and become president of an Ivy League College, Brown University in Rhode Island. She found her motivation in the death of her mother. She wanted her family to be proud of her.
Contrary to Ruth Simmons, our character felt betrayed and was under too much pressure; that’s why he dropped out of college.
Finally we started to learn some translation techniques and help for this type of exercise. We'll continue tomorrow.
