Immigration waves (the end) + advertisement

Hey,

today we first worked on the end of our commentary about the document entitled: "Immigration waves from 1800 to nowadays". Here is what we said about it:

The text seems to be racist at first since it categorizes people and even gives them nicknames such as « wetbacks » or « boat people ». But there is a paradox in the end since it praises cultural differences and multi-ethnicity. It shows that the mix of people is not just a loss but it can be a gain.
In the past, people feared / people used to fear that they would lose their jobs, their identities, their language…
But the author says the new blend can be very rewarding. It ends on an optimistic tone.

Then we continued speaking about the subject "Immigration" with an interesting ad combining different symbols from a multi-cultural America.

Here is what we said about it:

The document is an advert about milk. It depicts a Latin American boxing champion who is staring at us.
He is clad in (he is wearing…) a bathrobe with the American flag on it. He has a white moustache because he has just drunk milk. At the bottom there is a caption which is written in both Spanish and English. It is aimed at (the target is...) both Spanish and English speaking people, that is to say (= i.e.) mainstream Americans and Latin Americans.

HW: you need to finish making the oral recap of what we have begun to say, i.e. a comment on the different symbols from the document + you need to complete the translation worksheet "Check your vocabulary".

Files: you can download the worksheet here.
1.12.10

Warm up

Sign of disrespect

. Shouting/sreaming in the corridors for Students and teachers in class.
. leaving your papers on the floor for the maid.
= Written in a booklet

. Wearing a cap or hood inside the school for the rules, so the community.
. playing with the food for the cook and students.
= Common sense

. not being polite
. not smiling
. not your homework
. not trying to succeed.
= For theachers and myself

When rules are not respected (either common sense rules or if theyr are written in a booklet), it’s annoying. We should all abide by these rules to be able to live in community.

ADVERT : MILK

The message conveyed by the adveret is that everybody can succeed in America eve if they come from another country. The boxing champion with his bothrobe is a dear sign of success. He has managed
to fit in/ integrate into mainstream America.
He is proud xear a Star-spangled banner. The target of the commercialis unclear and that’s what makes it interesting.
For example, the message « where is your moustache ? » could be aimed at Latin Americans or mainstream Americans. The advertiser doesn’t make a difference. What’s more, in Spanish « su bigote » is
a sign of respect. It’s like the « vous, votre » in French.
