End of Dancer in the Dark (Scene 2 and 3)

Hey,

today we first spoke about the information that you had gathered about the prisoner you are going to write to. Here is what we said:

We talked about some prisoners, and what they did to be sentenced to death:

- Michael Hall: He kidnapped / abducted and killed a 19-year-old girl in 1998 (Amy Robinson). We also know that he is mentally retarded, his IQ is 67. (A low IQ is below 70 while the average IQ is 100/120).
- Michael R. Wayne: He raped / abused and murdered Marguerite Dixon. He is mentally retarded too (IQ= 62).
- Frank Spisak: He killed black people to “clean up the city” wearing the suit of Hitler.
- Timothy Adams: He killed his own 19-month-old son.
- Johnnie R. Baston: He killed Chong Mah, a downtown Toledostore owner.
- Humberto Leal: He raped and killed / murdered a 16-year-old girl.
- Joel Schmeiderer: He struggled his fellow inmate (Tom Harris) with a sock.
- David Jordan: He was condemned for a triple homicide.


All of them are on death row, they were sentenced / condemned/ judged / sent to jail / convicted to the death penalty.

 

 Then we continued watching the following scenes from Dancer in the Dark. Here is what we said about the movie:

Selma went to Billy’s house in order to talk to him because she thought he had stolen her money. Selma needed the money to pay for her son’s surgery.

Then Bill took a gun from his desk and threatened Selma with it. He gave her the weapon and shouted in order to alert / warn his wife. He asked his wife to get his handcuffs, call for the neighbours and for back-ups. He tried to turn the tables / pass for the victim.

In the end, Selma shot Bill because he had forced her. He had asked her to shoot him. He wouldn’t let go of the money. Selma was accused for killing a policeman and she was sent to death row.

Grammar:

Utilisation du Past Perfect
Forme:
HAD + V-ed = Participe Passé du verbe (3ème colonne du tableau des verbes irr.)

Usage:
Bouleversement chronologique quand on mentionne une action antérieure à celle mentionnée auparavant (il s'agit souvent de l’explication d'un fait passé par une cause antérieure).

Expression du but : " to " / "in order to" / "so as to"
Expression de la cause : " For "
