English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hey,
today we first warmed up with a recap of what we had said before about death penalty and Dancer in the Dark. I also gave you a list of prisoners from which you will have to select one person. For next class, you need to find information about him and why he is in prison. It will also be the person whom you'll send a letter to at the end of the sequence.
Then we watched the first scene from Dancer in the Dark and here is what we said:
We saw in the video a blind woman, Selma, who went to her neighbour’s house to take the money which he had stolen from her. She said that she really needed this money to heal her son. We can see that she was rather scared, maybe because she knew that she was weak compared to Bill; and if he decided to resist her, she would be alone and unprotected.
How to express hypotheses in the past and in the future:
Suppositions Why and How Bill stole Selma: --> May / might have + Participe Passé
Billy may have needed money, that's why he stole Selma.
He might have had financial problems.
He may have used Selma’s weakness to steal her money.
He may have profited from the situation.
Selma may have wanted Bill to help her count her money.
Hypotheses about the scene 2: --> May / might + V (base verbale)
He may kill Selma
He might lie to the police
He may hide the clues / evidence
He may clean the murder weapon
He might wear gloves in order to erase his fingerprints
You can click HERE to do this online exercise (it's the one you need to complete for Monday).
