American colleges + Amit's feelings

Hey,

today we first warmed up about the tuition fees of American colleges. Here is what we said about the subject:

According to the class you take, to enter an Ivy League college, an American student either needs a grant / scholarship or to have filthy rich parents.

Either...or... = soit..., soit... = notion de choix.

http://sorenz.dk/Film%202004/The%20Grudge%20poster.JPGThen we continued speaking about the text and in particular about Amit's feelings at his parents decision. Here is what we said:

"Still he refused to forgive them"
Amit bears a grudge against his parents.
Amit resents his parents' decision.

Finally, we answered all the questions of the exam except Question #6. Here are the answers:

1/ The main character is Amit.

2/ He was born in the USA. (Massachussetts) We can see that on lines 22 and 23. Everyone "assumed he had been born there and not in Massachussetts".

3/

- Langford : the city where Amit's highschool was.
- Winchester and Massachussetts : where Amit was been born and raised.
- Calcutta : where Amit's parents were born probably. It's the city where his relatives live.
- Delhi : where Amit's parents used to live when his father got a job as an eye surgeon.

4/ They come from India. His father is an eye surgeon. Amit's parents are wealthy even if his classmates' parents at Langford are much richer.

5/ They travel a lot. Consequently, Amit was forced to be sent to boarding school.

6/ "to what extent" = dans quelle mesure -> cf. HW

7/Even though : même si.
Even if he has succeeded in adapting to his new school, he bears a grudge against his parents. He is angry with his parents. Even though he has managed to fit in he resents their decision. (37 words)

In the very last part of the hour we began the translation exercise. Here is the translation that we have finally decided upon:

From Langford, during christmas and after each academic year came to an end, Amit went to Delhi to be with his parents, staying in their flat full of servants in Chittaranjan Park, in a barren room set aside for his stays.

==> A Noël et à la fin de chaque année scolaire, Amit allait de Langford à Delhi pour être avec ses parents et séjourner dans leur appartement de Chittaranjan Park rempli de domestiques...

HW: you need to complete question #6 on a separate sheet of paper and finish the translation. You also need to look up the vocabulary from your text and learn it by heart. You will have a vocabulary test very soon.

Hey Hernâni,

thanks for posting the lesson but you NEED TO pay more attention to the spelling of words and to their meaning. There was an important number of typos I had to correct and sometimes some non
sense. Correct your copybook and make sure you do not copy errors next time.

Take care,

Mr Hattais.
