English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hey,
today we first warmed up about your favorite activities. Here is what we said about them:
Favorite activites:
Ambre is a TV addict. She is addicted to/ hooked on Dr House. She thinks it's a fun show and it's really interesting.
As for Aurélie, she is also addicted to TV / she is addicted to TV too. She watches TV all the time. When she goes back home, she switches the TV on and she does her homework in front of the TV set.
NB: La place de "too" et "also" dans la phrase.
Then we continued speaking about TV and reality television more precisely. We gave the English equivalents of French TV programmes and we commented on the differences between the French rating system and the American one. Here is what we said:
Equivalents of shows in Britain
Le maillon faible ---> The Weakest Link
Qui veut gagner des millions ---> Who wants to be a millionnaire?
L'île de la tentation ---> Temptation Island
Koh-Lanta ---> Survivor
La Nouvelle Star ---> Pop Idol / American Idol
Cauchemar en cuisine ---> Hell's kitchen
Secret Story ---> Big Brother
NB: la prononciation des voyelles accentuées et la réalisation des voyelles non accentuées [ə].
The differences between the American rating system and the French one:
* G: It means that there is no violence, sex, or foul language in the show. There is no inappropriate material. Everybody can watch, even young children.
* PG: It means that the parents must agree before their children watch this show.
* PG-13: If the children are under 13, the parents must go and watch the programme with them.
* R: It means that children under 17 are not allowed to watch the programme except if their parents go with them.
In France, if a film is restricted (-12), a child is not allowed to watch even if a parent goes with him/her. It's (strictly) forbidden.
NB: be allowed to... ≠ be forbidden to...
HW: learn your lesson (new voc, grammar, pronunciation, ...) + elect a show from the list, explain what it is and say whether you would want to take part in it. Why or why not?
