World Aids Day - Dec 1st

Hey guys,

today we began working on a new topic: AIDS.

We listened to an interview of Bono, the leader of the band U2 who is involved in a charity acting against the pandemic. You can listen to it again below:

Here is what we said about the document and the comments we made about the disease:

The document is a report about an event which takes place every year on December 1st. It was launched by Bono (from the music band U2) in Sydney last year. He met with the prime minister to turn the landmarks of Sydney (such as the opera) red.

Red is the color which symbolizes AIDS. They talked about the huge progress in medicine and about prevention against HIV infections. There is no vaccine and no cure for the moment but a treatment that helps to live healthier with the virus.

The gathering was meant to:
- raise money / funds for research
- support people who are infected
- sensitize people / raise awareness about the disease

Ways to get infected:

- sharing an infected needle with a drugs addict.
- having sexual intercourse without "protection" (condoms/rubbers**)
-  from the pregnant mother to her child (although thanks to drugs, this can be prevented in most cases)

- transmission with infected blood (although this can be prevented too with blood selection).
