English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hey,
today we first spoke about the future wedding of Prince William and his fiancée. Here is what we said about this piece of news:
The wedding of Prince William and his fiancée is a topical issue = it's in the news at the moment. The couple has announced their official engagement. The announcement of the heir of the British crown has created a lot of gossip; but I don't care about the Royals / the Royal family.
Then we continued the class with the correction of the homework for today. Here it reads:
- French people are said to wear a beret as though it were the case for all of them / as if everybody wore a beret.
- French people are believed to drink to a lot wine as if everybody were drunkards / as though drank wine.
- The French are thought to have a big nose as if everybody had the same anatomy.
And finally, we started to talk about the text in some more details (global understanding of the characters and the situtation). Here is what we said:
Who?
Jean Marie is the boss of a French company (a tearoom chain). He's rather good at English.
Paul West is an employee / a consultant. His English is perfect: English is his native language / mother tongue.
Stéphanie, Marc and Bernard are the other employees / colleagues. They're bad at English / They're crap** at (l.12) English. They have a redneck accent; they make a lot of mistakes.
Where?
In Paris, in an office near the Eiffel tower.
When?
Maybe, around 2 pm after lunch time; maybe in the early morning.
What?
They are looking for a powerful name for the tearooms but they don't agree. Paul says the French colleagues' name isn't English. The French employees say Paul West's suggestion is flat.
