Tuesday, January 26th Group 1

Lesson of Tuesday, January 26th TS2P GROUP 1

Thanks to Lucie for her notes

Today we worked on the text you had to prepare for today:

Hard up shoppers abandon organic and fair trade goods

Michael did an oral account of the text. Very good

Then we talked about some notions:

Fair trade: A concept invented in order to help producers and farmers. Instead of buying big brand products we can buy fair trade goods

Big producers control the market because their products are sold at lower prices thanks to the scale economy. The more we produce the cheaper the products

An organic product: A natural product grown or made without chemicals ie without pesticides or fertilizers

GMO= Genetically-modified organisms

Arguments FOR and AGAINST organic and fair trade goods

For

Against

  • They’re better quality
  • They taste better
  • They’re healthier than ordinary products
  • By buying fair trade products I contribute to help poorer farmers
  • By buying fair trade products I contribute to protect the planet
  • They’re too expensive
  • To me, it’s only a trend
  • I’m not sure that the money is given to the poor farmers
  • I don’t trust the people who sell these products
  • I’m not used to buying these products
  • I think the products are less attractive for example I’d rather eat colorful yogurts even if I know they are made with chemicals
