The references of place in the text

Hey guys,

today we talked about the text again and we corrected your homework about the famous Ivy League Colleges.

Here is what we said about the places in the text and the influence they have on the main character:

There are lots of references to when the character wants to / would like to / wishes to / aspires to go and where from he wants to flee / escape. He comes from a poor Midwestern family / environment / background.

He is fed up with being treated like a hillbilly / redneck. He decides to go Florida and leave his Ivy League College of New Hampshire (Dartmouth). From Saint Petersburg, Florida, he can see the capital city of Cuba, La Havana, and dreams of revolution (a symbol for change his life).

Additional Vocabulary:

- whiz*: “a whiz kid” - brilliant, smart, clever …

- a reward / to reward / to be rewarded with

- a scholarship / a grant (money you get from the state to access higher education)

- tuition fees (price for school)

Cultural fact: Interstates Routes

- Even numbers (0/2/4/6/8) go from East to West

- Odd numbers (1/3/5/7/9) go from North to South

Pour Mercredi, il faudra terminer la traduction que nous auront entâmée Mardi.
