The Jell-O experience

Hey guys,

today you had both a Jell-O and Lucky Charms experience. I hope you had fun and that you will remember it for long. Here is what we said about it: 

Jell-o smells tasty
It smells like lemon and fruit

It smells as if it contained a lot of sugar

It looks quite disgusting

It looks like goo

It looks as if it was/were Martian food

It tastes yummy

It tastes like nothing I’ve ever eaten = It’s a new taste

It tastes as if it was/were unreal

How to express taste:

-Delicious # disgusting -tasty # awful - yummy # horrible

Gooey / strange -> bizarre -> weird -> odd

The layout of the cereal pack is designed to attract children:

• - The wizard

• - The flashy vivid colours (cf McDonald’s logo is also yellow and red to attract children)

Then we connected this experience to the characters in our text and the types of humour used by the author. Here is what we said:

In our text, Bill is attracted to the packs as if he was/were a child and his wife reacts as if she was/were his mother. The roles are reversed. It creates humour. (1)

Types of humour:

• 1- Situational comedy

• 2- Exaggeration

• 3- Irony

Ex:

- "pretend it's delicious chocolate chips cookies" -> brilliant (3)

- "a paradise of junk food" = it's like a dream (2)

- "microwave pancakes" -> "isn’t that wonderful?" = quite enthusiastic (2)

HW:

- apprendre la leçon et le nouveau vocabulaire.

- être capable de faire un compte rendu complet du texte.

- se préparer pour le test final (il aura lieu le cours après la correction des articles que vous avez faits à la maison).
