today we started a new sequence on immigration to the US and you first had to read a text in your books and report about the main information. We organised the information in a temporal spidergram (in the past / today / consequences / reasons). You can access the document here:
Here is the spidergram we wrote:
*In the past : - Europeans -> until the late 19th century
Reasons : - settle the country (first settlers / pilgrim fathers) = political reasons - gold rush = economic reasons - famine in Ireland = social reasons
*Nowadays - Hispanics : spanish speakers (Mexico, Cuba, El savador...) - Latin-American waves of "taco belt", immigration increase, more and more immigrants
Reasons: - find the American dream / make your dream come true - hope for a better future - Promise Land : a land of plenty and opportunities (self-made man) = economic reasons
*Consequences - limit / quota laws -> immigration began to be regulated -> illegal immigrants / aliens (weltbacks, boat people / raft people)
Reasons: - fear of the other - language = social reasons - unemployment / poverty = economic reasons - culture (different stories, religions, food...) = cultural reasons
Then we continued speaking about the subject with the analysis of the ad p. 33 of your books. Here is what we wrote:
The picture is an advertisement (ad) for milk. It promotes the advantages of the beverage. It depicts a young boxing champion who has a milky moustache. The message is more than just commercial. The moustache symbolizes his integration to society. He is fully accepted. However, he doesn't have to give up his culture : he can keep his language, his moustache and his looks. He is integrated into mainstream America. He is a "cross-over" star.
