India - vocabulary and presentation

Hi guys,

today after speaking about the dabbawala service in Mumbai, India, we continued the class correcting the vocabulary exercises and cultural facts you had to complete for last time.

Here is what we said about the report:

Warm up:

The box is a container for food, it's made of metal and it has a wooden handle.

The dabbawalas transport these boxes to their clients / customers. They bring their lunch to their schools or offices --> they sell a service but not the food.
The food is prepared / cooked by the owner of the box.

Vocabulary:

to deliver / to bring / to transport /

Wood / wooden /

handle

tin / metal

customers / clients

Here are the elements of correction and vocabulary from the worksheet:

1) despite: malgré  / Gap: différence - fossé / Rise (rose-risen): augmenter

2) malnourishment: malnutrition / overall: globalement / Impoverment: appauvrissement / life expectancy: espérance de vie

3) illiterate / illiteracy

4) Numbers:

35%: percentage of people who live on less than $1 a day.
60%: people in towns.
20%: people in rural areas who don't have access to proper sanitation and water.
63 yo: Life expectancy
61%: adult literacy increase over a short period in time.

6) Positive things about India:

- social aspects : infant mortality has decreased and life expetancy has risen. Adult literacy has risen too.

- economic aspects: poverty has declined. There has been a rapid economic development.

HW:
