English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
today you first took a vocabulary test. I hope that most of you will acheive good grades.
Then we continued the lesson with the scene of the trial from "In the Name of the Father".
You can watch it again below:
We commented on some important points from the video to understand why the situation was outrageous and why the defendants were outraged. Here is what we said:
ASU: Active service units. Units of the IRA. They are in charge of planning explosions and shooting people / of planting bombs.
Support network: They store weapons illegally. They hide the weapons in their houses.
Safe houses: They are places of storage and hiding places for people.
Terrorism Act / Law : The police can arrest people and keep them in custody for 7 days.
-> it's more difficult for the person who is arrested = more pressure from police = more likely to admit / confess something even if you're innocent.
Physical and mental abuse:
Physical -> The police put a gun in their mouth / squeezed his testicles / pulled him by the hair.
Mental -> frighten to kill them so that they confess / exclude him.
HW: for after the holidays, please update your binders (classeurs) correctly as I will grade them and learn your lessons about Ireland as you will have an oral comprehehsion test when we get back.
