Important definitions and final decision of the doctor

Hi guys,

today we tried to finish everything we had to say about the topic "Immigration to the US" even if we haven't had time yet. However, we managed to say lots of things and give important definitions:

E Pluribus Unum : it's the motto of the Usa. It means "out of many, one". It's the symbol of the melting pot. You can read it on coins, bank notes and official documents.

Out of many cultures, one culture

languages, nation

people, people

   communities,     community
   nations, religion
   countries,       country

Ellis Island : It's situated in the bay of N.Y.C where immigrants arrived before entering the country. They had to take 2 tests: a medical examination and a literacy test.

If they passed the test, they could enter in the USA.

If they failed they had to go back to their country of origin.

Pogrom : a massacre, a persecution of a religious group. There were many pogroms in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century against the Jews.

Final decision of the doctor:

When Carl Travers said that he passed the test,

Jacob was quite happy

amazed

quite surprised

flabbergasted (shocked & surprised)

He said: Do you mean I've passed the test? -> He is not sure he understood correctly. He is both scared and enthusiastic.

Jacob is so excited that he makes a lot of mistakes in English.
