English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hey guys,
today we first re-explained the grammar rule concerning the articles and we corrected the exercise related to it.
Here is the correction:
1- Ø Time flies!
2-I like Ø dancing but I'm not a very good dancer.
3- All the documents on the table come from that book.
4- Ø Women live longer than Ø men.
5- The people who work there say it's a dangerous place.
6- The relationship between Ø man and nature has become one of the most acute problems of our time.
7- It reflects the / Ø tensions inherent in Ø modern civilisations.
8- Ø Advances in Ø technology cannot conceal the fact that industrial Ø progress has deteriorated the environment.
Then we continued the class with the reading of a mock exam and we analysed how only the questions asked already gave us nearly all the answers needed. Here is a chart summing up the information you learnt about the characters, places, time, facts, and attitudes:
Who?
The narrator is a young woman who studies at university. She is in love with Dan who studies in a medical school. They are very different.
The narrator's father is a professor at this university.
Where?
It takes place in an American campus (« freshman »).
When?
During the Vietnam war, so during the late 60's and the early 70's.
What?
The professor has become famous because he played a major role in a protest against the Vietnam war.
Dan's mother is dead.
Atittudes of the characters?
The narrator has a problem of identity because of her father's celebrity / fame. The relationship between them might be difficult.
Dan could be « hard-working », « self -confident », « mature », « self-effacing » or « bossy ». But it is sure that his personality is different from the other students (and from the professor and the narrator's attitudes) and that he isn't ambitious because he doesn't want to become a neurosurgeon.
HW: you need to complete exercise # 2 from the grammar worksheet and also translate the text for those who had to translate it.
