Good resolutions + continuation of the text "The Fun They Had"

Hey,

today we first started with the good resolutions that you and I will follow in the year to come. Here is what we said in the warm up:

- I will be less absent-minded.
- I will follow my good resolutions.
- I will spend less time playing video games.
- I will work harder in mathematics.
- I will write better on the board.
- I will be more generous in my grades... --> You wish !
- I will give easier tests... --> You wish !

Will : notion de futur bien sûr mais aussi de volonté
Cf : a will of testament : un testament, les dernières volontés.

Then we continued on speaking about the text and we read some contrastive accentuation sentences. Here are some of the sentences we mentioned and the reasons why the words in bold letters are stressed:

l.2 Realvirtual
l.5 his grandfather
tommy's grandfather
l.12 Gee ! What a waste ! --> exclamations
l.8 awfully
a little
l.15 throw
keep
l.24 hate
love

Finally we finished answering some of the questions about the text (Questions 2b & 2c). Here is what we said:

Q°2b: The students put the papers in the machine and the teacher grades them automatically / in no time / very quickly.

in no time
very long / a lot of time

Q°2c : The inspector is actually a repairman; he looks after the mechanical teacher. He checks if there is a problem.
voc: Actually = en fait

Cf.:
I didn't grade the paper in a lot of time
I graded the paper in no time
no = abscence totale

Pay particular attention to the use of "no" which entirely restrictive (absence totale). You will always insist on that word to make a contrast with "a lot of...".

HW: I gave you a new document that we will finish studying on Friday. You will therefore have a test on the story on Wednesday. You were also given some homework for Wed. 13th and Fri. 15th.
