English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hi everyone,
today you first took a grammar test and then we continued the lesson talking about the social conditions in English in the 19th century. Here is what we said:
Unlike today, school was not compulsory in the 19th century in England. Children didn't have to go to school. Parents had to pay for education.
Almost only boys could go to school. They had to listen to the teacher or they were caned / hit with a cane / punished.
Obligation au passé:
-> HAD TO / DIDN'T HAVE TO
-> It was compulsory / It wasn't compulsory

Homework:
- apprendre la leçon = savoir parler de l'époque et faire la différence entre ce qui était obligatoire avant par rapport à maintenant.
