They hopped to succeed and be finally rich and well fed.<br /> 5) The new comers didn't expect to be considered as cheap workforce.<br /> <br /> p30-31 : "Why the caged bird sings?"<br /> - "caged bird" : Ana is probably "caged" because she is not free. She is undocumented. She is an illegal immigrant/alien.<br /> - "sings" : However, she can "sing" because she may have a job and she hopes she can make her dreams come true.
