today I first gave you your grades for the poems: congratulations to all of you for the good job you have accomplished. I will publish them on the blog as soon as I have scanned them.
Then, we moved on with the study of the text and here is what we said about the difficult situations Ana had to face:
Hardships / Ordeals(difficultés - obstacles - épreuves) Difficult situations: - She went through the Arizona desert. - She doesn’t have any ID. She an illegal alien. She is undocumented.
1) She had to find money to pay the smuggler / coyote[i]. • Helpful people: her sister gave her 1000 dollars. • Opponent: poverty in Mexico – find a reliable smuggler.
2) She had to cross the border in dreadful conditions. => cf. verbs of difficult movement: Crawl – trudge – scrunch – [land] • Helpful people: the smuggler. • Opponent: border patrol – the climate.
3) She had to find a job and earn money. • Helpful people: Christina, a teacher who employed her. • Opponent: immigration services.
4) She had to hide from the police / border patrol.
5) She had to climb the social ladder.
6) She had to abandon her children. • Helpful people: her mother. • “Opponent”: she is far from her children and family; psychological problems.
HW: - For Tuesday Jan. 5th: Complete the worksheet I gave you about the text. - For Wednesday Jan. 6th: Turn in the essay p. 31, Going Further, n°4. - For Jan. 20th: Turn in the type bac exercise I gave you.
