Aids - Recap + blood test

http://images.fineartamerica.com/images-medium/tie-a-yellow-ribbon-lyle-huisken.jpgHey guys,

today we continued working on the topic AIDS. We first did a quick recap of important things to remember about the illness and how blood testing and tranfusion were safe. Here is what we said:

- a landmark / a monument -> to go sight seeing
- a shop owner

* Goals:

The event is meant to... :
- raise funds
- raise awareness / make people aware
- encourage people to be cautious / careful

* Protection:
- condoms
- get tested after having unprotected sex
- no sharing needles

- treatment

* Blood transfusion is now secure thanks to two procedures:

 - a questionnaire to prove your honesty and assess (= evaluate) the risk of contamination
- the blood is warmed up to kill any potential virus

FACTS in the UK:

 > over 90% of people with HIV were infected through sexual contact
> you can get tested for HIV using a saliva sample
> HIV is not passed on through spitting, biting or sharing utensils

"to be written by Alexia"

Then we went over the meaning of the two little texts I had given you on Friday. Here is what we wrote on the board:

Ideas from the text:

It deals with ...

* ... the project of the artists who created the symbol in 1991 in NYC.

* ... getting people to talk about the disease

* ... the symbols (colour -> red = love / passion / heart  /// ribbon -> solidarity / support / compassion + Gulf War)

* ... the success of the project = the fact that the symbol is now known by everybody

HW:

- apprendre la leçon et faire ses fiches de vocabulaire

- recopier la partie "Ideas from the text" dans son classeur, partie "lesson"
