English Day by Day is designed for school students to improve their performance in the English language.
Hi everyone,
today we worked on the idea of "Dreamtime stories" again. We explained how these paintings with dots could be compared to the Bible for example. They represent the aboriginal beliefs (how the world was created).
You can read the story of the creation of trees here again:
A long time ago, during the Dreamtime, the land was flat and empty and the sun was very hot. A koala and a lizard were wandering in search for a home for the koala.
After a while, the koala became weak. “The sun is too hot for me,” he said to the lizard, “I cannot go any further. I need some shelter.”
The lizard looked around, but there was no shelter in sight. The lizard loved the warmth of the sun, but he saw that his friend, the koala, was very weak from the heat. He wondered if he could find a way to help shelter the koala while still receiving the warmth of the sun himself. Suddenly, the lizard got an idea. “Koala, my dear friend, I can provide you with shelter,” he said.
“You? But you’re so small! How could this be possible, Lizard?” asked the Koala.
The lizard lifted himself from the ground and rose until he was balancing on his tail. “Take some dirt and throw it on my body,” he instructed the koala. The koala did as the lizard asked, and as the brown dirt hit the lizard, it caused him to grow higher and higher and take on the brown color of the dirt. As he grew, he stretched out his arms and legs. The dirt spread onto them but left his fingers and toes alone. His green fingers and toes widened in order to shelter the koala from the sun.
The koala sat under the shelter that the lizard had provided, and the first tree was created.

Reminder:
Australia is both an island and a continent.
The Aborigines are the "first Australians", the people who lived in Australia before it was discovered and colonized.
Dreamtime stories are the beliefs of the Aboriginal people about the creation of the world. It can be compared to a religion.
