Hi guys,

today we first warmed up in English talking about your holidays. We learnt that Bilel was like a squirrel: he had money for Christmas but he saved it for the sales.

Then we continued talking about immigration to the US. Here is the lesson:

Waves of immigration to the US

In the .......'s, the Chinese went to the USA to build the railroad. They wanted to have better wages and to raise their children.

In the .......'s, the Eastern Europeans went to the US to flee the wars and religious persecutions. They wanted freedom and an easier life.

In the .......'s, immigration slowed down because of political measures (laws) and economic reasons (the Wall Street Crash in 1929).

Today, immigrants are mostly war refugees.

Vocab:

railroad / wages / (to) raise / (to) flee / freedom / (to) slow down / political measure = law / economic reason / war refugee

Hi guys,

after we listened to the audio document again and worked on a new document (a graph with some captions), here is what you could say about the different waves of immigration:

-> The Irish wanted to escape the potato famine.

-> The Chinese wanted to have an easier life. They arrived in the USA to work in mines and build the railroad.

-> The Eastern Europeans ... (to be continued...)

Hi guys,

today we didn't have class because you had two educators who came to the school to present their work and some important notions dealing with justice.

So you'll need to know your lesson for next time (Friday).

Hi guys,

today we worked on making a recap of the interview of Paola Badia about NYC. Here is what we said:

Lesson: The districts of New York City

The motto of the USA is "E Pluribus Unum". It means that there are a lot of people from different countries in the same place. It's a "melting-pot".

The different communities tend to live together in the same districts:

TheAfro Americans live mostly in the Bronx and Harlem whereas the

Chinese live in Chinatown and in Queens.

In Brooklyn, there are Eastern Europeans like the Poles or Ukranians.

The Italian community lives in Little Italy.

The Latinos such as the Cubans, Puerto Ricans or Columbians live in the Bronx and East Harlem. The nickname of East Harlem is "El Barrio". It means "district" in Spanish.

Hi guys,

today we continued talking about New York City and we focused more precisely on the different people and districts which form the city. We can say that it is a "fantastic melting-pot".The motto of the USA is: "E Pluribus Unum". = Out of many (nationalities), one (nation).

You can listen to Paola Badia talking about it in an interview again below:

We didn't have time to write the lesson but we'll finish this next time.

Here are the notes we took:

Hi guys,

today you first had to answer a quiz about health and then we worked on describing and commenting on the following picture:

http://idata.over-blog.com/3/18/86/31/2nde/Ellis-Island/Statue-of-Liberty-Manhattan.jpg

We presented, described and analysed it. You had to use some expressions about probability when you were not sure (ex: who are the people on the boat?"

Maybe / Perhaps / Possibly / Probably

Hi guys,

today we finished trying to understand how to use the two tenses in English.

We completed your worksheet and we made a quick recap of what you had to know before your test.

Finally, I revealed the mystery picture to you. An old photo of New York City taken from the harbour with a view on the Statue of Liberty.
