http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_onQvIg4FVII/R-igWeNr9yI/AAAAAAAAAi0/AWWWYrFCnFs/s400/genes.gifHey,

today we first warmed up with this question: "if you could modify one of your genes, what gene would you change...?" Here is what we said:

If I could modify a gene of mine...:
- ... I would correct my vision because I'm myopic / short-sighted. (≠ long-sighted)
- ... I would grow wings in my back to fly.
- ... I would enhance (+++) my strength to carry rocks on my back.
- ... I would change my eye colour because I think they are too common.
- ... I would change my corpulence.
- ... I wouldn't change anything because I believe I'm perfect.

Then we continued working on the subject: "Genetics" with the trailer from the movie Gattaca. Some of you saw it, others have only listened to it... Here is what we said:

The document is the trailer of the movie Gattaca.
It deals with science experiments and more precisely gene manipulation.
We understood that someone is going to change identities in order to obtain a job.
For his interview, he needs to be genetically perfect.
Employers don't select applicants according to their mental abilities but according to their genes.

Vocabulary:

- a scientist
- an experiment
- a sample

- a syringe
- a doppelganger (-) / an alter ego (+)

You can watch the trailer down here:

HW: learn your lesson and vocabulary.

Hey,

http://www.arronbailiss.co.uk/scientist.pngtoday we first did a quick warm up and then we finished speaking about Rosie the Riveter and its author, Norman Rockwell.

Warm up:

It gives me goosebumps / the chills.
It's freezing cold.
It's chilly.
It's cold enough to freeze off witches' tits.

Here is what we said about Norman Rockwell:

http://www.princessandpirate.com/rockwell_thanksgiving1.jpgHe was both a painter and an illustrator. He had a very long career and published a lot. His most famous works deal with "Americana", that's to say the American way of life.
His most famous works: Rosie the Riveter and Thanksgiving.
They were published on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post, a New-York based magazine.

Additional Vocabulary:

i.e. : that's to say
a handerchief

Then we continued the class with a new sequence entitled: "The Dangers of Science?" and we particularly focused our attention on an opinion poll carried out in the USA about cloning.

You can download the worksheet here:

1--159-.png

HW: for tomorrow, you need to explain if you are for or against cloning and give your reasons. You may use the arguments in the worksheet.

More information about Norman Rockwell's painting "Freedom From Want" (Thanksgiving) here.

 Hey,

today we first did a quick warm up. Here is what we said:

If I were a soldier, I would be patriotic. (Julien's point of view)

If I were a soldier, I would be a coward. I would make believe that I'm sick because I'm scared of blood. I don't want to kill people. (Lena's point of view)

Then we continued speaking about the London Blitz. Here is what we said:

air raid shelter (abri anti aérien)
striking (frappant, remarquable)

It's a German word. It means a bolt of lightning. It refers to the most intense period of the bombing of London during WW II from Sept 1940 to May 1941. London was under attack night and day. The most striking event was the bombing of a school which served as an air raid shelter. There were 450 casualties / victims. It was the deadliest attack / the most lethal attack.

Finally, we started to comment upon the picture "Rosie the Riveter" by Norman Rockwell. Here is what we said:

Rosie the Riverter : By Norman Rockwell

The picture is propaganda for women to take men's jobs during WW II. She is the symbol of the new woman who is independent, the woman who is both feminine and masculine.

  Masculine symbols:

- Oversized
- Muscular
- Riveting gun / penis
- Overalls
- Loafers

  Feminine symbols:

- Lipstick
- Rouge
- Nail polishhttp://images.art.com/images/products/regular/13212000/13212199.jpg

- Curly combed hair

- Sandwich (domestic activity)

HW: For next time, you need to make some research about Norman Rockwell. You will have to make a 2 or 3-minute talk about the artist.

Hey,

today we first warmed up about the trip to England that some of you are going to take in March. It's going to be so much fun! I'm longing for it.

http://www.saak.nl/battlefieldtour/2008%20england/london/london%20(23).jpgThen you took a vocabulary test and we explained the main differences between WWI and WWII. Here is some information that we wrote down:

Voc:

countryside (campagne)
seaside (bord de mer)
suburbs / outskirts (banlieue)
safe
landing
bombing

The characters in the text are probably not on the seaside because it wasn't safe. There might have been bombings or the landing of the enemy.
They are probably in the countryside. They feel safe even though the war sounds dreadful to them.

Then we continued studying the theme of the war with a document about the London Blitz. Here is what we said about the chronology of events:

Time line of the London Blitz: 1940-1941

Sept 7, 1940:
- beginning of the Blitz

4 p.m. - 6p.m. :
- the bombers launched the 1st attack

8 p.m. - Sept 7, 1940 :
- the second attack lasted until the next day.

From Sept 8, 1940 to November 1940 (57 days):
- London was bombed every day and every night (= intense, long)

May 11, 1941 :
- the end of the Blitz. Hitler sent his troops to the Russian front.

Most lethal attack:

- school bombing: lethal for a lot of people.

HW: learn the information from the new document about what happened.

Files: you can download the worksheet about the Blitz here.

More information about the blitz here.

Hey,

http://www.ineedmotivation.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/vocabulary.giftoday we first warmed up about the foul weather we had this morning. Here is what we said:

Speaking about the weather :
It's raining cats and dogs.
It's depressing.
I'm soaked wet.
I'm soaked through.

Then we continued working on the text and we answered the questions from the exam. Here is what we said:

Before the war, they didn't know each other very well but now things are different. They consider him as a member of their family ("old friend").

Before the war, women used to be housewives / stay-at-home mothers whereas now they replace men.
The men had to join up the army and the women had to take their jobs. For example, Lilian is a conductress on the tram and Nell knits uniforms for the Belgian army. Mentalities have changed. Women have earned more rights. They have become more independent.

HW: you will have a vocabulary test on Tuesday. Get prepared for a written comprehension exam very soon.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__BdubNlqYtE/SXaYa155wnI/AAAAAAAAC3c/C7gZDsUEe44/s400/ashamed.jpgHey,

today we spoke a little more about our text dealing with the first world war. We particularly focused our attention on Nell and Frank. Here is what we said about them:

Nell: She is not a widow anymore. She wears an engagement ring on her finger. She has a new lover / fiancé.

a widow -> woman
a widower -> man

Nell's attitude: Nell is quite patriotic when she sees Bill Monroe who tries not to go back to the Front, she thinks he is a coward. She thinks it's unfair for Percy if he doesn't go back. She is shocked / under shock. She is ashamed and embarrassed because, for her, every soldier should be brave and courageous.

cowardly (adj)

Frank's attitude: Frank is nervous. He doesn't want to talk about the trenches. The living conditions are dreadful / horrible. He is tongue-tied. When he finally evokes the trenches (chlorinated tea water), he feels ashamed because of the look of terror on his friends' faces.

HW: for next time, you need to know your lessons by heart and you will have looked up all the vocabulary that I gave you.

Hey,

today we first warmed up about your feelings at the beginning of this year. Here is what we said:

Warm up: Back to school

After two months' holidays...
... I feel distressed and disappointed to come back to school. I feel exhausted in the morning. I already feel under stress for the A-Levels. I don't want to fail.

fail ≠ succeed

(to) fail an exam
(to) pass a exam
(to) take an exam

CULTURE:
Advanced-Levels (A-Levels) = baccalauréat

GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) = DNB (brevet)

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:NzmQ6u80NxN-9M:http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arcrawfo/images/Family_Tree_img.jpg&t=1Then we continued working on the text. We wrote things about the different characters and we drew a timeline of events. Here it reads:

Back home from the Front.

The text deals with Frank, a British soldier, who is on leave. He visits his neighbours, the Barkers for tea. During their conversation they speak about Bill Monroe, another neighbour, whose mother tried to stop the military policemen from making her son go back to the Front.

The Barker family:

- mother = Rachel
- daughters :
1)Lillian : she works as a woman conductress

2)Nell : she was engaged to a soldier and makes uniforms for the Belgians troops.

- Percy, Nell's ex-fiancé: he died when he was at war.

The Monroe family:

- the mother : Mrs Monroe
- her son : Bill Monroe

- Bill, Albert, Frank and Jack are soldiers.

Chronological order of the events from the story:

Before 1915:

1) Albert joined the army
2) the men in the neighbourhood joined the army
3) the second battle of Ypres (death of Percy ?) / policemen came to make Bill Monroe go back to the Front and his mother tried to stop the soldiers.

After 1915:

1) Frank came home. He had tea with his neighbours.

HW: for next time, you need to learn your lesson and you also need to highlight in your text some information about the characters' attitudes and feelings. Don't forget to update your vocabulary / phonetics / grammar / ... sections in your folders.

Hey guys,

this is the first post of the year, yoohoo! so welcome back to school. I hope we'll have a good time this year studying English.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/spl/hi/picture_gallery/07/magazine_faces_of_battle/img/3.jpg

As for today's lesson, it is Lena's turn to update it. We began to study the text that was given for last year's A-Levels session. Here is what we said about the method to study a text:

Il faut s'aider en cherchant des réponses aux Q° en "wh-"

Liste de mots interrogatifs:

Where ? -> le lieu
When ? -> le temps
Why ? -> la raison
What... for ? -> le but
How ? -> la manière / l'attitude

Questions types de compréhension générale:

What happened ? What are the main events ? -> les événements principaux
Who are the main characters ? -> les personnages principaux
Where does the scene take place ? -> le lieu de l'action
When is the scene set ? -> la période

HW: One group needs to focus on the characters and make a hierarchy between them. The other one needs to focus on the timeline of events and re-order them.

Files: you can download the text and questions here.
